We
hope you all had a great time and enjoyed our inaugural Duck Derby and
Claisebrook Carnivalé. It was a quacking good, fun-filled family day,
and a huge success.
Everyone that adopted a duck, or came along for the day, left with a
smile and great sense of well-being. It was a chance for families to
get together and have some fun (particularly everyone who wore yellow
and quacked!)
After all, everyone loves a rubber duck. It reminds us of childhood.
Who doesn’t remember Sesame Street ‘s Ernie in the bath singing: “Rubber
Ducky, You’re the One!” (Or, more recently, “Six Little Ducks go
Quack, Quack, Quack!”)
Events of the day presented a colourful spectacle, winning abundant praise from all quarters.
Your participation enabled the Rotary Club of Heirisson to support
Telethon and selected Rotary community, international and vocational
activities.
The Duck Derby website will be updated soon with wonderful photos of the
"Waterfall of Ducks", the "Escaping Ducks" and highlights of the
Claisebrook Carnivalé.
Later this year, duckophiles and carnivalistés can find out about our
2012 events on this site, Heirisson’s Facebook page or the Duck Derby website.
Please bookmark these and keep an eye out for news about next year.
Watch this space for the announcement of our 2012 Duck Derby.
See you in 2012!

David Cleary, our host!
The Events
David Cleary, President of the Rotary Club of Heirisson opened the inaugural Claisebrook Carnivalé and Duck Derby, held on Sunday 20 March 2011, welcoming our visitors with great aplomb.
After a traditional welcome, the events of the day began.
All the fun of the fair came to the Derby venue, Claisebrook Cove, in East Perth, a beautiful location with many great places to eat or visit. Carnivalé stallholders were kept busy over the day, with up to 10,000 people coming to Victoria Gardens, overlooking the Cove.
Part of Eat Drink Perth (thanks to the City of Perth), our Mardi Gras style community fair was a riot of colour, for young and old. A happy crowd browsed the stalls, emphasising Australian arts and crafts.
Visitors enjoyed varied activities and live roving entertainment, including Flute & Veg, the Go for 2 & 5 troupe, xxx jazz band, and the Flash Mob. There was great food for all. (Thanks Karrinyup Rotary, who helped out with their food van.)
Heirisson’s Duck4Cover duck decoration, Arty Brellas, Nikki Marie face painting, Old McDonald’s Animal Farm and the Rainbow Tractor Train were particularly popular with the younger crowd. Lots of happy kids with sticky hands and painted faces.

An estimated 10,000 people visited the fair, and its 35 stallholders. Initial feedback from visitors and stallholders reported a “really great day”.
Carnivalé coordinator Judith Morrisey (aka "Duck Feet Paddling Madly") said: "Despite all the logistical challenges before the event, on the day things ran like clockwork".

The 'pink swan' corporate challenge at midday was a hoot.
Intended simply as a ‘mad cap’ event, for sponsors and other firms who wished to participate, this event replaced a corporate duck challenge when the planned duck floaties were scratched because of short supplies.

Our swan-uppers found herding an
eyrar of swans was a challenge in itself.
The race card of colourful avians, some decorated in corporate liveries, was assembled in Victoria Gardens and escorted to the start line by their sponsors. The birds from City Toyota, Haughty Culture and Konecranes were particularly resplendent in their race gear.
Wafted by the breeze our swans almost took flight. On the water, they frolicked and danced across the Cove like a bevy of ballerinas from Swan Lake. But in the end, gagging like geese, they had to be ‘encouraged’ to the finish.
The challenge was won by ... (Swan-Upper in Chief, James Booth, is still trying to work it out!)
Overlooked by curious observers in the luncheon crowds at local eateries around the cove, the event delighted many, especially the lucky few youngsters fortunate enough to be gifted the swans by their sponsors after the event.
Our adopted ducks flocked to the shores of the Claisebrook Cove to race in Perth's inaugural Duck Derby! All our ducks were tagged by the wonderful people at PD enterprises, who held them securely until the big day.
Fluffy Duck was out scooting across the water in her rubber duckie, amusing adults and children alike.
Bumper crowds and a last minute rush for tickets saw over 9,250 ducks adopted. The little quackers waited anxiously to take the plunge and race down the 100m course in an effort to win.
A team of hefty Heirisson Rotarians escorted the four duck delivery hoppers, designed by Duckmeister General Mike Shade, to Trafalgar foot-bridge. At 2.00pm with a clarion call from race Steward Peter Rice, plastic ducks cascaded spectacularly into the Cove, to loud acclaim from over 2,500 duck-spotting spectators.

The spectacular sight of ducks hitting the water was enjoyed by an excited crowd. It was a highlight of a memorable day that is set to become part of Heirisson’s folklore. Everything went smoothly, like water off a duck’s back.

From his position on the water, President David saw those yellow ducks, against an orange background, cascade down off the bridge. He said: “It was nothing less than spectacular and it coincided with a loud gasp from the very large, curious and expectant crowd around the Cove.”
Course master Gary Redmond, and his team of volunteer duck wranglers, skilfully corralled the ducks to the start line with floating booms between their own rubber duckies, all supervised by Fluffy Duck. Yes, a few stragglers were in the outfield, but our duck wranglers soon had them back on track.
On the Call to the Post, they were off. There was no ducking the fun! Thousands of rubber ducks fought it out to the finish - with help from our special DMD (Duck Motivation Device, an auto-gyro on a pontoon) that propelled our ducks to the finish line.
Lord Mayor of Perth, Lisa Scaffidi, plucked the three lucky ducks. (See above for the winners list.) She was in awe of the proceedings and offered her congratulations, support and attendance next year. She was thrilled!

Some great prizes were soon on their way to the adoptive guardians of our winning ducks, thanks to Orba Travel Brokers, Aussie Home loans, RAC Finance and IGA Supermarkets.
Our participants, spectators, beneficiaries and local community are the real winners. They had fun and around $30,000 was raised for some very worthy causes.
Several people were overheard saying the Duck Derby it was the funniest thing they'd ever seen. (Just wait until next year!) Watching our pontoon pilot, Alastair Bryant, aim our DMD to propel the ducks, that’s no exaggeration. Ducks were going everywhere.
Duckmeister General, and Ticket Holder Extraordinaire, Mike Shade said: "Quack!" (He’s still recovering.)
No, there is no truth to the rumour that some lame ducks are still floating in the river! All our little quackers are safely washed and bedded down in their nesting boxes ready for next time.
The Rotary Club of Heirisson thank all our sponsors, beneficiaries, volunteers and other supporters for their help in making our inaugural Duck Derby and the Claisebrook Carnivalé such successes.
With our partner Channel 7 Telethon, we gratefully acknowledge the cooperation, support and sponsorship from the following groups and organisations:
Firstly, thanks go to Heirisson club members, their families, friends and other volunteers, who helped out on the day. What a fantastic support team, many of whom had already been involved in the months leading up to the event. It was a huge undertaking and all at Heirisson can take credit for this very successful event.
The events were based on initial ‘on-site’ research by Paul Griffin and Lis Smith around Perth, in Launceston, Brisbane and Mandurah. It was an extraordinary nine-month effort from Mike and Lyn Shade, Ahmed and June Siddique, Judith Morrisey and Moo Marketing’s Miranda Woodhouse, Tim de Boer, Marc Dimmick, Louise Cleary, and Peter Rice, with James Booth who organised the corporate challenge, and all the peripheral members of the project team.
Over 40 members participated during the day together with Friends of Heirisson. Many people were instrumental in helping with infrastructure and running of the events; not forgetting all those who organised websites, promotion, printing, ticket sales, stall sales and set-up, traffic and parking, duck ordering and delivery, and of course the Duck Derby flotilla. All of which were expertly orchestrated by the team.
It was a wonderful sight to see all those yellow T-Shirts spread throughout the Carnivalé as well as around the Cove and on the water. It should make everyone proud to be part of these events’ success. It represents the beginning of a series of great club event into the future.
Heirisson Rotary Club conceived the initiative, and delivered the events with the help of various sponsors. City of Perth (EatDrinkPerth), Lotterywest, and Healthway (Go for 2&5, and Smoke Free Events) were lead sponsors of the Carnivalé.
CA Technology and Channel 7 (Telethon) were lead sponsors of the Duck Derby. Prizes came courtesy of Orba Travel Brokers, Aussie Home Loans, RAC Finance, and IGA supermarkets. Many organisations helped with skills and materials, including:

The DMD auto-gyro was provided courtesy of xxx. Thanks also to the great folks at Haughty Culture, who put up and helped out with construction and painting into the wee small hours in the weeks before the Derby.
Event promotion and logistics were assisted by: the City of Perth, Channel 7 Perth, 6PR Perth (882 AM), The Sunday Times, and Moo Marketing. Capital Community FM (6SEN – 100.7 FM) and Curtin Radio (100.1 FM) were also of great help. Transperth assisted greatly by providing extra CAT buses for the day. Thanks also go to City Toyota who provided a shuttle-bus for stall-holders.
Steve Mills from 6PR generously agreed to be our Master of Ceremonies for the Derby. Thanks also to Louise Cleary, logistics coordinator par excellence (she helped get our ducks lined up) and Daniel Cleary, public announcer extraordinaire (our chief quacker).

Jacky and Michael Rennie, from ShelterBox, also came along with the latest model, so visitors could check out “What’s in the Box?” used in recent disasters around the globe, including Christchurch and Tokyo.
From initial reactions, we trust that our sponsors and supporters were pleased with their involvement. It was gratifying that they showed an interest in these events.
Proceeds from these events will go to Telethon WA, Rotary WA Cord Blood Bank, Foodbank WA, Loreto Vietnam-Australia Project, Wheelchairs for Kids, St. Bartholomew’s House, and other Heirisson and Rotary projects. We thank them for their participation, and for staffing their displays on the day.
Heirisson hopes to keep you advised of any 'headlines' about our beneficiaries’ activities so we can keep our members and friends informed and engaged with the great work we all do.
We're planning to host a simple function soon to thank our sponsors, beneficiaries and other key players. We will advise further details shortly.
Thanks to everyone for your outstanding support of our Carnivalé and Derby. If you have any great stories, tall tales, photos or video, please get them onto our Facebook event page or our Facebook photo album. Really great images and stories are a very effective way of promoting these events next time.
To make next year's events even bigger and better, we will be 'debriefing' this year's experience shortly. We welcome any general public feedback on Facebook.
For more operational, technical, background or strategic matters, we ask that views on the Duck Derby event and website should be relayed through the Duck Derby contact page. Views about the Claisebrook Carnivalé should be relayed through the Heirisson website contact page.
We will be considering all feedback received before compiling the final report on this year (so we may not follow up with you directly unless we need further information). Planning for next year will begin shortly thereafter.
Thanks!
Planning for next year will begin shortly (after a brief ‘recovery’ period). Heirisson looks forward to great things from the Derby into the future, as an iconic community event that people don’t want to miss; one that can engage and benefit a wide range of community groups and charitable organizations, and produce a great deal of fun and public spirit.
Please contact us if you or your organisation would like to participate in any way. We’d like everyone looking forward to next year being bigger and better.
The 2012 Duck Derby will be back with a few surprises - so watch this space for the latest news!
Until then ...
carry on Quacking!
