| Topic – Rotary Group Study Exchange visit to California in May 2007 This years team led by Rebecca Moore comprised: Suzanne Spitz – Rural Health Jeffrey Williams – Nursing co-ordinator Jill Benn – Library manager Clare McMurtrie – Marketing communications Much pre-trip planning was undertaken. Uniforms, presentations, gifts and time spent with the Inbound GSE team from California. Encountered some “language” difficulties with many words that the Americans do not understand. Spoke to the Californians about many local projects including the Rotary Cord Blood Bank, Wheelchairs For Kids &ROMAC. Enjoyed the interaction with local families who hosted our team members. Features of the trip included: • Sailing & skydiving • Visiting a Firestation (& meeting the firemen it seems) • Visit to Hollywood although it was not as glamorous as expected • Go kart racing (Clare finished last) • Laguna Beach • Meeting “Chucky Cheese” (who ??) apparently he is supplier of animation equipment to Disneyland • Visiting Las Vegas • Visiting Big Bear Lake, Newport Beach & Palm Springs It was an amazing journey – a trip of a lifetime – and they were overwhelmed by the reception they received from the locals, 90 of whom attended their send off function. Rebacca advised that the next GSE Team will go to South Africa in May 2008 and applications are now open for the Team leader and team members. Applicants must be between 25 – 40 years and not be a son/daughter of a Rotarian (or grandchild). Criteria includes presentation skills and leadership potential. |
